PAD leaders at Thammasat University
Members of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) yesterday voiced their support for the establishment of a political party in a bid to establish the so-called “New Politics” in Thailand.
Several ten thousands of PAD members yesterday rallied at the football stadium of Thammasat University’s Rangsit Campus to mark the first anniversary of last year’s 193-day-long protest against the attempts by the then governments to amend the kingdom’s constitution and to dissolve a special agency investigating alleged corruption cases against former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Thailand’s state planning agency, the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB), today said the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) contracted by 7.1 per cent in the first quarter of this year, putting Thai economy into a recession for the first time in a decade.
NESDB secretary-general Ampon Kittiampon said the 7.1-percent contraction when compared with the same period last year, further falling from 4.3 percent drop in the fourth quarter of last year, is the heaviest fall of the country’s economy since the financial crisis in 1997.

Thai Oil Plc, Thailand’s biggest refiner, earlier this week said it has returned to a net profit of 2.28 billion baht in the first quarter of this year after a huge net loss of nearly 8.4 billion baht during the last quarter of last year.
However, the first-quarter net profit, derived from the sale revenue of 56.5 billion baht, was about 41 percent lower than that of the same period last year when the sale revenue was recorded at 96.3 billion baht.

Thailand’s largest coal miner Banpu Plc (BANPU) today said its net profit in the first quarter of this year rose to almost 4.8 billion baht, increasing more than double from 2.1 billion baht from the same period of last year.
Chanin Vongkusolkit, chief executive officer of Banpu Plc, said in the company’s reports to the Stock Exchange of Thailand that about 3.6 billion baht of the first quarter’s net profit came from coal business while nearly 1.17 billion baht was from the company’s power business.
