The joint venture of Ch Karnchang Plc and Japan’s Tokyu Construction yesterday won the bid to build a 12-kilometre electric train line linking Bangkok to neighbouring Nonthaburi province.

CKTC Joint Venture of Ch Karnchang and Tokyu Construction bid some 16.72 billion baht for the first part of Bangkok’s 36-billion-baht “Purple Line” mass transit project while the closest contender, Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction Plc, quoted at 17.1 billion baht and Italian-Thai Development Plc at almost 17.92 billion baht.

The tender won by CKTC Joint Venture is the first of three contracts for the elevated Purple Line train line, stretching for a total of 23 kilometres from Bang Yai in Nonthaburi to existing subway station in Bang Sue in Bangkok.

Chukiat Potayanuwat, assistant governor of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), said the MRTA board is expected to negotiate with CKTC JV to lower the contract price because the cost estimation had been calculated since July last year before the cost of construction materials declined.

He said the bid will then be sent for approval from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) which will be providing financial support for the project and finally submitted to the Cabinet for final approval, so the contract signing may fall on the end of March or early April.

The first contract will include the construction of 12-kilometre train line from Bang Sue to Tao Poon and from Tao Poon to Rama III Bridge and a total of eight train stations along the line.

The second contract, whose bid opening will be made next month, will be for the construction of 11-kilometre line, also with eight train stations, from Rama III Bridge to Klong Bang Phai in Bang Yai district, which will include the construction of a bridge crossing Chao Phraya River, south of Rama II Bridge.

And the third contract, whose bidding has already been made since last August, will be for the construction of a maintenance centre in Bang Yai and four park-and-ride buildings at Nonthaburi Intersection station, Tha It station, Bang Yai station and Klong Bang Phai station.

JICA is now studying technical papers of the five bidders vying for the third contract. In addition to CKTC, Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction and Italian-Thai Development, the bidding was also participated by Takennaka-Ritta Joint Venture and Power Line Engineering Plc, ASCON Construction Plc and Ruamnakorn Construction Co Ltd.
