Dr Tarisa Watanagase was appointed by Thai Cabinet on October 17, 2006, to become the first female governor of the Bank of Thailand, succeeding M.R. Pridiyathorn Devakula who left the central bank to become the deputy prime minister and finance minister in the interim government of the then Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont.

Dr Tarisa, the 21st governor of Bank of Thailand, has a vast experience in every key department of the Bank of Thailand, including research, bank supervision and payment system departments.

For Dr Tarisa who had studied for several years in Japan, in addition to English which has long been the main second language in Thailand, she can also speak Japanese very well.
