The leaders of anti-government People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) today announced at a press conference that the protesters will officially end their six-month-long protests by 10 a.m. tomorrow.
The announcement was made hours after the Constitutional Court dissolved the country’s ruling People Power Party (PPP) and two of its coalition partners, Matchimathipataya and Chat Thai parties, on charges of electoral fraud stemming from last December’s general election.
Sondhi Limthongkul, one of PAD core leaders, told the press that the Government House, earlier used as the sit-in ground for the protesters, and the country’s two main airports, which have been besieged by the protesters since November 25, will be returned to concerned authorities.
As a result of the Constitutional Court’s verdicts, members of the three parties’ executive committees will be banned from politics for five years.
The operations of both Suvarnabhumi international airport and Don Mueang airport are expected to resume for passenger flights soon although the Airports of Thailand (AoT) has just issued a statement today saying the closure of the airports for such flights would be extended to 6 p.m. on December 15.
Air-cargo flight services at Suvarnabhumi airport has however resumed operation since 9 a.m. today after a meeting between PAD leaders and AoT senior executives as the protesters did not want to further damage the country’s export.
PAD started its street protests against PPP-led coalition government on May 25 against an attempt by the government to amend the country’s 2007 Constitution to nullify several authorities which were investigating and considering several charges against former premier Thaksin Shinawatra and his family members.
