Thai PM to invite US president Obama to visit Thailand

Thailand’s Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva today said he would extend an invitation to US President Barack Obama to visit Thailand via the US Secretary of State.

According to a report of the state-run Thai News Agency (TNA), Prime Minister Abhisit disclosed during his weekly television and radio address that his invitation to the US president will be made via US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who will arrive in Thailand on Tuesday and later meet with the foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) during the meetings in the southern resort of Phuket during the next two days.

The Thai premier said his discussion with the US Secretary of State will be focused on relations between the two countries and Washington’s role in ASEAN region as the United States has placed more importance towards this region.
US Secretary Clinton will attend the 42nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM), the Post Ministerial Conferences (PMC) and the 16th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) during which she will sign the Instruments of Accession and Extension to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) with ASEAN ministers.

The United States is one of nine Dialogue Partners of the ten-member ASEAN. Other partners are Australia, Japan, Canada, Republic of Korea, China, New Zealand, India, Russia and the European Union.

Meanwhile, Somsak Suriyawong, director-general of the Department of Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, revealed that the US Secretary of State will arrive at about 3 p.m. on Tuesday and call on Prime Minister Abhisit at the Government House at about 5 p.m., before proceeding to Phuket to take part in the ASEAN meetings.
