Thailand plans to enforce security law for ASEAN Summit
Thai government plans to enforce the Internal Security Act (ISA) in the adjacent seaside resorts of Cha-am and Hua Hin during October 12-27 to ensure the peace and order during the 15th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.
Thailand’s Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Tuesday said although the 15th ASEAN Summit will be held from October 23 to 25, the imposition of ISA at the venues of the Summit ahead of the time is aimed at providing concerned security officials sufficient time for several preparations and the establishment of an operations centre.
Meanwhile, Dr. Panitan Wattanayakorn, deputy secretary-general to the prime minister, explained that the ISA will prohibit any unauthorised person from entering the venues of the Summit while set up conditions on travel and transportation and restricts the use of electronic devices which would affect the safety of people and properties.
He said the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) will establish the security centre and appoint its chief to supervise the operation.
The Abhisit government in April was forced to cancel the ASEAN Summit with its dialogue partners when red-shirt-clad protesters of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) stormed into the meeting venue in the eastern resort of Pattaya.
However, the government successfully imposed the ISA during the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting in the island resort of Phuket in July to prevent any recurrence of undesired incidents which might be touched off by the protesters.
